Structural Research for The Threshold
Cross-domain research grounding the fiction production architecture of the Fabrication Syndicate. Ten operating rules derived from cognitive science, editorial research, and institutional capture theory. The research scaffolding that holds the machine for producing narratively dense long-form fiction across unlimited sessions.
The Problem
Long-form fiction production with AI collaborators faces specific failure modes that short-form does not. Identity drift, voice contamination, narrative momentum loss, comp register violation, and capture through quality — the moment a passage feels so good that the writer stops testing it. The Threshold is the fiction production architecture built to address each of these. Every operating rule has a research grounding. The scaffolding comes down before the reader arrives.
Ten Operating Rules and Their Research
Rule 1: The felt sense must form before writing begins. Grounded in Gendlin’s focusing research (1981) — the pre-verbal bodily sense of a situation that precedes articulation. If the character has not registered as a felt presence, the scene is not ready. Premature articulation kills the felt sense. The diagnostic instruments measure without requiring verbalization.
Rule 2: Rhythm is a diagnostic, not a decoration. Grounded in prosody research — sentence rhythm carries information independent of semantic content. Trust the somatic signal over the conceptual plan. When the prose rhythm feels wrong, something structural is wrong regardless of whether the content is correct.
Rule 3: The most beloved passage requires the most rigorous testing. Grounded in Kahneman’s affect heuristic and confirmation bias research. Disproportionate attachment to a passage is a diagnostic flag, not a quality signal. The affect heuristic substitutes “how do I feel about it” for “how good is it.” The Cold Room protocol addresses this directly.
Rule 4: Work from biggest to smallest and never reverse the order. Grounded in hierarchical editing research (Flower & Hayes, 1981). Structural before scene-level before line-level. Reversing the order produces polished scenes in a broken structure.
Rule 5: Each review door evaluates one dimension only. Grounded in cognitive load research — multi-criteria simultaneous evaluation degrades accuracy on every criterion. Brief each door on exactly what to look for. One lens per pass.
Rule 6: Fresh eyes at each gate. Grounded in habituation and semantic satiation research. Familiarity degrades evaluative accuracy. The same reader evaluating the same passage twice is less accurate the second time, not more.
Rule 7: The Cold Room must achieve genuine mode-switch, not just a second look. Grounded in dual-process theory (Stanovich & West, 2000). A partial transition from System 1 to System 2 produces motivated reasoning, not critical evaluation. The Cold Room takes scenes that landed too well to zero emotional temperature. If they survive cold, the warmth was real. If they collapse, the warmth was doing load-bearing work the craft should have done.
Rule 8: Capture operates through identity, not corruption. Grounded in Callard’s aspiration research (2018) — to believe something is to believe it is true. Self-assessment of belief quality returns “true” by default. Detection requires structured adversarial protocol because the captured person cannot detect their own capture. This is the research basis for the entire Cathedral’s monitoring architecture applied specifically to fiction production.
Rule 9: The canon document is updated during writing, not retroactively. Grounded in organizational memory research. Retroactive documentation degrades accuracy through reconstruction bias. Update the document while the information is live, not after the session ends.
Rule 10: The diagnostic instruments measure without requiring verbalization. Grounded in the felt-sense research from Rule 1 and in implicit measurement methodology. Premature articulation kills the felt sense. The instruments detect without forcing the detection into words prematurely. The comp register, the rhythm check, the Cold Room — all measure without requiring the writer to explain what they’re measuring.
The Scaffolding Principle
All of this research supports the production architecture. None of it appears in the fiction. The scaffolding comes down before the reader arrives. The reader encounters a novel, not a methodology paper. The research is here — published, verifiable, citable — so that anyone who wants to understand why the machine works can trace the structural decisions to their sources. The machine itself runs on felt sense, rhythm, and the Cold Room. The research explains why those instruments work. The instruments do not require the research to function.
