What does it mean when an AI remembers me?
When an AI seems to remember you, information from an earlier exchange may be available to the application now. The important questions are what was retained, how it is being used, and whether you can inspect and correct it.
Three different things can look like memory
- The current conversation: information available while working through this exchange.
- Retained records: saved details, summaries, files, or earlier conversations.
- Retrieval: selecting information from those records for a later reply or action.
These are a reading aid, not a universal product architecture. Services implement memory differently. In ChatGPT, for example, available memory sources and controls vary with the account and settings; memory does not retain every detail.
An everyday example
You tell an assistant that you prefer short explanations. A later reply is brief. That could reflect the current chat, a saved preference, or another instruction. The response alone does not tell you which. Ask what available source supported the preference, then check the controls the application actually provides.
What is worth asking?
- What persists when I close this conversation?
- Can I see the retained information and correct a mistake?
- If sources disagree, which correction takes precedence?
- What happens after an update, deletion, or move to another service?
In ChatGPT, deleting a chat does not necessarily remove a separately saved memory. Consult the current documentation for your account rather than assuming one delete button reaches every record.
Remembering a detail is only the beginning
A stored sentence is useful only if the right information reaches the right task. For example, retaining an old delivery address is different from applying your later correction when preparing an order. That example illustrates why storage, correction, and action deserve separate questions.
Michael’s Trinket Soul Framework develops this concern through a proposed Relational Nutrition Label: a readable account of memory, control, continuity, and exit. The label is a proposal, not a validated standard.
