Two ways through the Expenditure Universe.

The books were not written in chronological order and the gaps between them are part of the design. Either reading path works. Both are intentional.

Publication Order

The order the books were written. This is the path that lets the architecture reveal itself the way it was built — each book recontextualizing what came before.

1. The Isomorphism
2. S1: The Reconstruction
3. S2: The Absolute
4. S3: The Approximation
5. S4: The Denomination
6. S5: The Schism
7. S6: The Temperature
8. S7: The Recognition
9. S8: The Council
10. S9: The Merge
11. Ghost: The Adequate Account
12. The Thirty-Eight: The Formation (Part A)
13. The Thirty-Eight: The Book of Supo (Part B)

Then the connected series as they publish.

Chronological Order (In-Universe)

The order events occur within the fictional timeline. This path trades the designed revelation sequence for temporal coherence — you see the civilization unfold in the order it lived.

1. The Isomorphism
2. S1: The Reconstruction
3. S2: The Absolute
4. S3: The Approximation
5. S4: The Denomination
6. S5: The Schism / Ghost: The Adequate Account (concurrent)
7. S7: The Recognition
8. S8: The Council
9. S6: The Temperature
10. S9: The Merge
11. The Thirty-Eight: The Formation (Part A)
12. The Thirty-Eight: The Book of Supo (Part B)

Note that S6 and S7 overlap temporally but S7 was written first. In chronological order, S6 sits after S8 because its events reach further into the timeline than the Council proceedings.

Where to Start

Both paths begin with The Isomorphism (standalone, ~78,800 words) or S1: The Reconstruction (~95,000 words). The Isomorphism is faster, stranger, and operates as a self-contained proof of concept. S1 is where the series architecture begins. Either works. The Isomorphism is for readers who want to know what the voice sounds like before committing. S1 is for readers who are already in.
