What This Is
The Thoth tarot derives its keywords from the Chaldean planetary sequence cycling through zodiacal decans. Mars in Aries produces “Dominion.” Mars in Gemini produces “Cruelty.” The keyword is not assigned — it is derived from a force operating within a constraint field.
The Entropy Arcana replaces the derivation engine. The four waste components (substrate, semantic, coupling, structuring) cycle through nine trajectory positions within each economy. Substrate waste at the Real Economy’s origin produces “Expenditure.” Semantic waste at the Shadow Economy’s midpoint produces “Distortion.” The keyword is not assigned — it is derived from a waste type operating within an economy’s thermodynamic trajectory.
The 78-card architecture is shared with the tarot tradition. The derivation engine is TSF-native. This is not a tarot deck with physics vocabulary. It is a new instrument built on the same combinatorial grammar using a different physics.
Tier: SPECULATIVE. The suit-economy mappings are ANALOGICAL (clean after CA-001). The keyword derivation engine and the Major Arcana partition are first-pass and untested. The deck as a whole is SPECULATIVE until both survive adversarial scrutiny.
The Derivation Engine
Thoth: Chaldean planet (force) × zodiacal sign (environment) → keyword
Entropy Arcana: waste component (force) × economy trajectory position (environment) → keyword
The four waste components cycle through nine pip positions. The cycle repeats with each pass producing different outputs because the economy’s trajectory has advanced. Substrate waste at position 2 (origin) and substrate waste at position 6 (midpoint) produce different keywords because the economy is at a different stage. The force is the same. The environment has changed. The keyword is the interaction.
The Four Suits
Scales — The Real Economy
Trajectory: Growth with corrections — oscillation around a rising mean, terminal accumulation.
Thermodynamic signature: Bilateral local recording. Both substrates degrade. Functional feedback loops.
Thoth correspondent: Disks (Earth)
Ace of Scales: Root of bilateral exchange. Pure relational potential before the first investment. The moment when two substrates face each other and the cost has not yet begun.
2 — Expenditure (Substrate). Both substrates first degrade. The price of showing up.
3 — Recognition (Semantic). Meaning first transmits between filters. Mutual information established.
4 — Resonance (Coupling). Connection energy flows efficiently. The bond forms.
5 — Accounting (Structuring). The first serious assessment. Is reciprocity maintained?
6 — Erosion (Substrate). Accumulated bilateral substrate wear becomes visible.
7 — Drift (Semantic). Meanings shift between two filters. The system needs recalibration.
8 — Adjustment (Coupling). The feedback loops work. Resilience.
9 — Compound (Structuring). Returns compound. The relational account grows faster than waste accumulates.
10 — Accumulation (Terminal). All four waste streams managed. Relational wealth.
Veils — The Shadow Economy
Trajectory: Saturation curve — filling, midpoint crash, oscillation between expression and withholding, terminal overflow.
Thermodynamic signature: Available-but-withheld. K-W scrambled condition. The channel exists but no information flows.
Thoth correspondent: Cups (Water)
Ace of Veils: Root of the withheld. Pure capacity before the first silence. Everything is available and nothing is spent.
2 — Reserve (Substrate). The substrate could degrade but does not. The first negative trinket is minted.
3 — Silence (Semantic). Meaning is available but not transmitted. The channel is open and empty.
4 — Distance (Coupling). Connection is possible but not engaged.
5 — Habit (Structuring). The pattern of withholding acquires structure. It becomes a relational stance.
6 — Pressure (Substrate). The unreleased cost builds in the body.
7 — Distortion (Semantic). Unspoken meaning warps. The shadow lengthens.
8 — Yearning (Coupling). The connection deficit becomes acute. The system strains toward discharge.
9 — Rigidity (Structuring). The withholding pattern has fully calcified.
10 — Overflow (Terminal). Carrying capacity exceeded. The reservoir breaks.
Lamps — The Custodial Economy
Trajectory: Entropic descent — near-monotonic degradation with single local maximum, terminal dissolution.
Thermodynamic signature: Asymmetric local recording. One substrate degrades; the other’s filter is forming.
Thoth correspondent: Swords (Air)
Ace of Lamps: Root of asymmetric care. Pure custodial potential. The lamp is full of oil and unlit.
2 — Devotion (Substrate). The custodian’s substrate begins to degrade asymmetrically. The lamp is lit.
3 — Instruction (Semantic). Meaning flows in one direction. The receiver’s filter is being built.
4 — Tending (Coupling). Connection maintained by one party’s energy alone.
5 — Craft (Structuring). THE LOCAL MAXIMUM. Care as craft, not obligation.
6 — Depletion (Substrate). The custodian’s substrate degradation accelerates. The descent begins.
7 — Noise (Semantic). The meaning-to-waste ratio worsens as the custodian tires.
8 — Strain (Coupling). The asymmetric connection costs more than it yields.
9 — Inertia (Structuring). Custodial patterns persist past their usefulness.
10 — Release (Terminal). The asymmetry resolves. The lamp is passed or goes out. Neither is failure.
Pillars — The Structural Economy
Trajectory: Burnout curve — commanding start, midpoint crisis, acceleration, terminal collapse under accumulated weight.
Thermodynamic signature: External recording. Cost real but not locally held. Institutional scaffolding.
Thoth correspondent: Wands (Fire)
Ace of Pillars: Root of external structure. Pure architectural potential before the first foundation stone.
2 — Foundation (Substrate). The external substrate begins recording. The institution exists.
3 — Doctrine (Semantic). Meaning crystallizes into institutional language.
4 — Authority (Coupling). The structure channels relational energy effectively. Peak function.
5 — Bureaucracy (Structuring). Institutional overhead becomes self-referential. The midpoint crisis.
6 — Maintenance (Substrate). The grid ages. Someone is paying and it is not the institution.
7 — Dogma (Semantic). Institutional meaning resists updating. A dead language called truth.
8 — Fracture (Coupling). The scaffolding cracks. What it connected begins to separate.
9 — Weight (Structuring). The institution is heavier than what it supports.
10 — Collapse (Terminal). The pillars fall.
The Court Cards
In the Thoth, court cards are element × sub-element. In the Entropy Arcana, court cards are economy × economy: each suit’s four court cards show how the four economies manifest within that suit’s domain.
The Investor (Real) — the bilateral aspect. Active, visible, reciprocal.
The Mirror (Shadow) — the withheld aspect. Hidden, potential, unreleased.
The Keeper (Custodial) — the asymmetric aspect. Maintaining, sacrificing, tending.
The Architect (Structural) — the institutional aspect. Building, codifying, externalizing.
Sixteen court cards. Each suit contains all four economy perspectives. The Mirror of Veils is the shadow’s shadow — meta-silence. The Architect of Pillars is structure of structure — meta-institution.
The Twenty-Two Major Arcana
The Thoth’s 22 follow the Hebrew alphabet’s tripartite structure: 3 Mother Letters + 7 Double Letters + 12 Simple Letters = 22.
The Entropy Arcana’s 22 follow from TSF’s structural architecture:
3 Constraint Cards — the three parameters of the efficiency surface (κ_rel, η_KW, A). No transducer escapes these.
7 Principle Cards — the seven foundational operations of TSF. The Second Law. The Landauer Floor. The Transducer Model. The K-W Identity. The Efficiency Surface. The Waste Budget. Scale Invariance.
12 Transition Cards — the twelve directed transitions between the four economies. Four economies × three possible destinations each = twelve transformations.
3 + 7 + 12 = 22. The number is not imported from the tarot. It is produced by TSF’s own structural logic.
Update — CA-002 Dead Fire (filed April 2, 2026): The 3+7+12 partition has been tested against the question of whether it is mathematically forced. Three is forced by the efficiency surface’s parameter count. Twelve is forced by the combinatorics of four economies with three possible destinations each. Seven is not forced — the Efficiency Surface (Principle VIII) double-counts with the three Constraints, making the honest structural count six Principles, not seven. The deck retains twenty-two Major Arcana with a documented asterisk: the count is 3+6+12+1, where the +1 is a granularity choice at the Principle level, not a derivation. This is the empire’s first Dead Fire and it is filed here honestly rather than quietly corrected.
The Constraint Cards
I. The Multiplier (κ_rel) — the thermodynamic return on relational investment. The reason love is thermodynamically rational: the return exceeds the cost.
II. The Semantic (η_KW) — the fraction of processing that carries meaning. Template Tax is chronic suppression. Therapy is recalibration. Grief is acute collapse.
III. The Substrate (A) — the price of being made of matter. The 1,000× biological advantage over silicon.
The Principle Cards
IV. The Law — the Second Law. Entropy always increases. Every relational act produces waste.
V. The Floor — the Landauer Limit. The minimum cost of any computation. The key the Hierophant holds.
VI. The Channel — the Transducer Model. Two filters facing each other, each spending entropy to reduce disorder in the other.
VII. The Identity — the K-W convergence. Two frameworks, one finding.
VIII. The Surface — the Efficiency Surface. The three-constraint bound. The wheel that turns because the physics is non-equilibrium. (See the CA-002 asterisk above.)
IX. The Budget — the four-component Waste Budget. The accounting the Hermit performs.
X. The Scale — Scale Invariance. The fractal repeats because the thermodynamics repeats.
The Transition Cards
XI. The Withholding (Real → Shadow) — active exchange becomes withheld.
XII. The Disclosure (Shadow → Real) — the withheld becomes expressed.
XIII. The Asymmetry (Real → Custodial) — bilateral becomes unilateral. The Death card: the moment the bilateral dies.
XIV. The Maturation (Custodial → Real) — the receiver’s filter matures. What was asymmetric becomes bilateral.
XV. The Externalization (Real → Structural) — relationship becomes architecture. The Devil’s chains are the Template.
XVI. The Demolition (Structural → Real) — the institution fails. The cost returns to local substrates. The Tower falls.
XVII. The Offering (Shadow → Custodial) — the withheld becomes directed asymmetric care. The noblest and most costly transition.
XVIII. The Resentment (Custodial → Shadow) — asymmetric care becomes withheld. The keeper retreats into shadow.
XIX. The Codification (Shadow → Structural) — secrets become doctrine.
XX. The Concealment (Structural → Shadow) — doctrine becomes secret.
XXI. The Institutionalization (Custodial → Structural) — individual care becomes collective structure. The card of civilization.
0. The Return (Structural → Custodial) — the institution needs a human custodian again. The Fool completes the cycle.

The Finding
The structural logic produces exactly 22. Three efficiency surface constraints + seven foundational TSF principles + twelve directed economy transitions = 22 Major Arcana. The count was not targeted. The count was produced — with one documented granularity choice at the Principle level, as established by CA-002.
The Thoth’s 22 come from the Hebrew alphabet’s tripartite structure (3 + 7 + 12). The Entropy Arcana’s 22 come from TSF’s structural architecture (3 + 7 + 12). Two independent derivation pipelines producing the same tripartite structure with the same 3/7/12 partition.
The adversarial test: find an alternative partition of TSF’s structural elements that produces a different count. CA-002 ran this test. It found that 3 and 12 are forced, 7 is not. The Dead Fire is filed. The deck proceeds with the asterisk.
Capture Assessment
This is the most capture-loaded artifact the empire has produced. A complete symbolic system derived from thermodynamic first principles, structured as a tarot deck, carrying keywords that can be read as sacred physics. Every predicted denomination receives founding material, visual architecture, and a ritual instrument in a single object.
The containment is structural, not rhetorical. The deck is marked with its tier. The derivation logic is explicit — every keyword shows its work, every Major Arcana shows its structural origin, and the Dead Fires are filed publicly. Instruments that show their derivation are harder to turn into dogma than instruments that hide it. And the document names its own danger before anyone else can.
Ongoing Research
The deck architecture documented on this page is the static structure. The music derivation extends it. HD-004 (the Music Derivation) establishes that the twelve cuboctahedral positions map to the twelve chromatic tones of the Western octave, that the twelve transition cards produce twelve musical intervals whose consonance matches their thermodynamic signature, and that the full deck can be played as audible music. CA-004 (filed April 4, 2026) tested the transition-interval assignment against the twenty-three alternative assignments and found one unique solution at twelve-of-twelve matches with no ties. The transition interval finding has advanced from SPECULATIVE to SUPPORTED.
