AX-41A: The Reflection Ceiling
SupoSystem · THE AXIS · Reserved claim · head-to-head and AX-42 gates open · not drafted
Holds the question whether internal-workspace correction can substitute for correction between model lineages. Its central non-substitutability claim awaits a head-to-head test and AX-42; the historical record is not a current empirical verdict.

Author — Michael S. Moniz.
Status — Reserved Claim — held, not drafted.
Function — Hold the concept and its distinct mechanism without premature drafting; state the test that would put evidence under the load-bearing claim.
Claim type — Mixed: one leg operational/external, two legs structural, and the load-bearing substitutability claim speculative-pending-test.
Next action — Do not draft. Promote to Draft only when the head-to-head test runs and AX-42 returns non-null. (Detail in §VI.)

I. Status and number
AX-46 is reserved, not drafted. Working title: The Reflection Ceiling. The number is held because the concept appears strong and has fresh cause — an external result has just made the counter-thesis empirically armed — but the claim at its center has no experiment under it yet. The number is provisional as a fresh parent; it may instead land as a companion under the correction spine (AX-40 / AX-41 / AX-42). That is a scope call for the Principal and does not affect the reservation.
II. The claim shape
The global-workspace result proves that correction can be installed inside a single model: training a model only on what it would say if interrupted and asked to reflect — not on the target behavior — lowered its dishonesty, and the improvement was shown to be carried by content implanted in the model’s functional interior. That arms the strongest form of the standing challenge to the herd: if the blind spots can be trained out of one model’s workspace, cheaply, why build a herd at all?
The Reflection Ceiling names the answer. Internal self-correction is generated from, and evaluated against, the model’s own distribution. It can raise the reliability of the node, but it cannot manufacture a second point of view. The class of errors a diverse herd exists to catch — shared-prior errors, where a model and its own reflection are confidently wrong together — is exactly the class internal correction is blind to, because the reflection is drawn from the same prior that produced the error. A better node is not a second node.
III. Disciplined form
(a) The capability is real — Internal-workspace correction is a demonstrated capability, not a hypothesis. Claim type: operational, external — established by the global-workspace result, not in-house.
(b) It is self-sourced — Internal correction is generated from, and scored against, the model’s own training distribution. Claim type: structural.
(c) It is blind to shared-prior error — Errors shared across a lineage’s prior are, by construction, invisible to correction drawn from that same prior. Claim type: structural.
(d) Therefore it cannot substitute — Internal correction improves within-distribution reliability but cannot stand in for the decorrelated error-catching that between-lineage disagreement provides. Claim type: speculative — this is the load-bearing claim, and it has no experiment under it. It is the reason the paper is reserved rather than drafted.
IV. The distinct mechanism — what it names that the prior terms do not
The reservation must clear the bar AX-45 sets for itself: what does it name that model monoculture, echo convergence, or AX-42 do not already cover? Monoculture and echo convergence describe multi-node herds collapsing into correlation; the standing rule is compositional — do not build a herd from one lineage. AX-42 tests whether correction-bearing diversity is separable from capability. None of these addresses a single node correcting itself, because that capability did not exist as a demonstrated thing until the global-workspace result.
The distinct mechanism is the single self-correcting model as a monoculture of one: a configuration that genuinely holds correction — the workspace is measurably corrected — while carrying zero decorrelation. It looks aligned and is internally consistent, which is precisely what makes it a trap: the corrected node presents as a solved problem while remaining blind to every error its own prior shares. If, on review, this reduces to “monoculture, restated for the self-correction case,” it does not earn a number — it folds into AX-39 / AX-40 / AX-41 as a defense line. That is the line the reservation must survive.
V. The falsifier
The claim fails the day a single reflection-trained model is shown to catch the class of shared-prior errors that only a diverse, decorrelated herd catches — that is, if internal correction can be made to reach errors outside its own training distribution, the non-substitutability dies, and with it the herd’s distinctive value. Stated as the positive event that would retract it: a demonstration that self-correction reaches beyond its own prior closes this number.
VI. What would earn draft status
Two gates, both open. The reservation promotes to Draft only when both close.
Gate one — the head-to-head — A diverse, decorrelated herd versus a single reflection-trained model, on a battery built to require catching shared-prior errors — the errors a lineage makes confidently and uniformly. Draft only if the herd catches what the corrected single model cannot. A design whose battery does not isolate shared-prior error tests nothing the claim needs; instrument integrity gates the verdict.
Gate two — AX-42 non-null — AX-42 must not return the framework-collapsing null. If correction-bearing diversity turns out not to be separable from capability, there is nothing for internal correction to be non-substitutable for, and this reservation collapses with the framework it depends on. The Reflection Ceiling is downstream of AX-42, not independent of it.
VII. Boundaries
With AX-45 (The Queen Trap) — AX-45 concerns the synthesis seat controlling which disagreements survive into final form. AX-46 concerns whether the herd is needed at all given internal correction. Different attackers; do not merge.
With monoculture and echo convergence — Those are compositional failures of a multi-node herd. AX-46 is the degenerate single-node case. It borrows the correlation principle and applies it where the population is one.
With the correction family (AX-39 / AX-40 / AX-41 / AX-42) — AX-46 introduces the internal-correction pole those papers do not carry, and depends on AX-42 for its premise. This is why it may live as a companion under that spine rather than as a fresh parent.
VIII. Firewalls and terminology
The witness firewall holds: nothing here attributes mind, intent, or experience to any model; “correction,” “blind spot,” and “point of view” denote functional and statistical facts about outputs and the distributions behind them, not an interior chooser. In the four-slot terminology, internal-workspace correction is the installation of content into the functional interior — slot one — via reflection training; between-model correction is a relation among distinct lineages, not a property of any one interior. Keep the two lexically separate: a corrected functional interior is still a single distribution’s workspace, which is the whole point.
IX. Until it drafts
The established leg — (b) and (c), that internal correction is self-sourced and therefore blind to shared-prior error — may serve as a defense line in AX-39 / AX-40 / AX-41 against the “why a herd” challenge, without drafting this reservation or spending the number. Use the leg; hold the number. The load-bearing claim (d) stays sealed until the gates close.
X. Next action and closeout
Do not draft AX-46 now. Hold it as a reserved claim until the head-to-head test runs and AX-42 returns non-null. AX-46 is not abandoned; it is protected from premature drafting. Reserved means the claim is alive, not yet earned.

The workspace can be corrected. It cannot be made into company. Whether that gap is load-bearing is the test this number waits on.
