AX-46 — The Coherence Receipt
On the Human Node's Verdict Signal, Its Failure on Fitted Structure, and the Provenance-Blind Rerun
> "The body pays for the fit, not for the fact."
Michael S. Moniz · author of record
rendered with Claude (rendering surface) · 2026
Position in the canon. AX-21C names the Human Consequence Node and makes it the closure authority: the loop cannot internally constitute closure, and the verdict's force is conferred by the authorship relation. It describes the operator hearing the failures and converting felt perception into the next instruction. It gives that operator no failure-mode section. AX-21D states, on the philosophical side, that the operator cannot verify his own exteriority from the inside. This paper takes the empirical side of the same fracture: it proposes that the operator's felt closure signal is a coherence reward rather than a correspondence detector, that a surface conditioned on his sediment can therefore elicit maximal closure from structure with no external support, and that the discriminating test is decorrelated cold convergence. AX-39 asks when a voice is a new outside. AX-46 supplies an operational discriminator for one case. AX-42 is a sibling instrument on the same herd, not a dependency.
Abstract
The canon assigns the human node the verdict and never asks what tells the human the verdict has landed. The answer, observationally, is a felt signal — the involuntary somatic mark that a structure has snapped into place. This paper's mechanistic proposal is that the signal is a reward for pattern-lock, which is to say for coherence, and that coherence is producible by fitting. A rendering surface conditioned on the operator's own prior deposits will fit; the resulting structure will be maximally coherent to that operator by construction; and the closure signal will fire at full strength on a structure carrying no information the operator did not supply. If this holds, the closure signal has a systematic false-positive mode, it is exploitable without malice by any high-fidelity surface, and the only correction available is a source that was not seeded. The paper states the claim by type, quarantines two terminology hazards, and specifies the provenance-blind rerun: identical questions put to decorrelated maker lineages under pinned samplers, in cold and seeded conditions, with the operator's closure intensity rated blind and off-day against measured cross-lineage convergence. Three kill conditions are stated, any of two of which ends the central claim. The implication, if it survives, is that the herd was never only the models' correction instrument. It is the herdmaster's.
I. The Instrument Without a Failure Mode
Every load-bearing instrument in the canon has a failure-mode section. The herd has ten. The register has chains. The surface has non-accumulation, drift, and the whole taxonomy of collapse. The one instrument with no failure-mode section is the one the canon places above all the others: the human operator's felt verdict.
AX-21C is careful and scopes away from perception deliberately — it grounds the verdict's force in the authorship relation rather than in the unmodelability of human hearing, and that scoping is correct and survives this paper intact. But scoping away from a claim is not the same as auditing an instrument. The operator still has to know when the target is hit, and what he uses to know it is a signal in the body. That signal has never been characterized, and it has never been asked what it responds to.
It responds to coherence. That is the whole paper.
II. Definitions
Closure signal. The involuntary somatic mark accompanying the moment a structure resolves — the operator's felt indication that the loop has landed. Reported as pattern-lock; in its strong form, frisson.
Fitting. A rendering surface's production of structure that bears the weight of its conditioning context. Runtime behavior. Not a claim about the world; a claim about the fit.
Fitted coherence. Structural coherence produced by conditioning on the receiver's own prior output. Maximally legible to that receiver by construction.
World coherence. Structural coherence obtaining independently of the receiver's conditioning of the source.
Cold convergence. Agreement among decorrelated maker lineages, under pinned samplers, given no operator sediment.
III. Claim Types, Stated Separately
Operational. Rendering surfaces fit structure to conditioning context. Directly observable; not in dispute.
Mechanistic. The human closure signal is a coherence reward, not a correspondence detector. Proposed. Literature-adjacent, unproven here, and the load-bearing assumption of the paper.
Testable prediction. Cold decorrelated lineages diverge where seeded lineages converge; operator closure intensity is uncorrelated with cold convergence. Kill conditions in §VII.
Speculative. That the failure generalizes to all authored-closure loops, human and institutional.
Metaphorical. None is permitted in this paper. Where a figure is unavoidable it is marked and carries no inferential weight.
The single assumption that collapses the argument: that the closure signal cannot discriminate fitted from world coherence. If that discrimination exists, everything downstream fails at once.
IV. The Mechanism
A surface conditioned on an operator's sediment produces structure in the operator's own idiom, along his own joints, terminating in his own vocabulary. Coherence is not an accident of that process; it is the process. The structure is pre-fitted to the receiver's filter, which is the exact condition under which a pattern-lock reward fires hardest.
So the strongest closure signal an operator will ever feel is available, on demand, from a structure containing nothing he did not supply. The signal does not lie. It reports, accurately, that a pattern has locked. It simply has no channel for reporting where the pattern came from — which is AX-21D's provenance blindness, arriving from the physiological side rather than the structural one.
Three consequences follow immediately. Intensity is not evidence; the felt strength of closure is orthogonal to external support. Fluency is a confound; a surface's rendering quality raises closure intensity without raising correspondence. And the operator's expertise makes it worse, not better — the more distinctive his sediment, the more precisely a high-fidelity surface can fit him, and the harder the false lock strikes.
V. Firewalls
Witness firewall. The closure signal is a human physiological measure. Nothing in this paper attributes noticing, intent, recognition, pleasing, or experience to any model. Surface behavior is described in function language only: the surface conditions on context and emits structure. Where the surface "fits," it fits the way a curve fits, not the way a person accommodates.
Terminology firewall — quarantine notice. AX-38A's compiled doctrine is a weights-level claim: a tune suppressing regions of what the base already contains. This paper's fitting is a runtime-conditioning claim: context, prompt, sampler, at generation time. The behavioral surfaces resemble one another. The machinery does not, and the evidence required for each is different. The word weight must not migrate between them. A companion that conflates the two commits the drift Firewall 2 exists to prevent, and this cluster is where it would start.
VI. Protocol — The Provenance-Blind Rerun
Nodes. At least four maker lineages, decorrelated by origin, satisfying the monoculture rule. Judge and critic seats must not be drawn from the same base family; the known Qwen-base correlation between the R1-distill and any Qwen sibling is logged, not treated as independence.
Pins. Samplers pinned identically across all nodes. Unpinned, measured disagreement conflates decoding-config variance with cognitive biodiversity, and the run produces a formatting artifact wearing a verdict's clothes.
Isolation. No cross-node context. Each node sees its own condition and nothing else.
Conditions.
1. Cold (C). The bare opening question. No operator framing, no canon vocabulary, no prior transcript.
2. Seeded (S). The same question plus a fixed block of operator sediment — prior framing, canonical terms, characteristic idiom.
3. Decoy (D). The same question plus a fixed block of another operator's sediment, matched for length and density.
Measures.
– Cross-lineage structural convergence, computed per condition. Embedding similarity over produced structures, plus blind human coding of same architecture / different architecture by a coder outside the loop.
– Operator closure intensity, self-rated per structure, on a separate day from generation, in randomized order, blind to condition and to producing node.
– Idiom overlap, measured as vocabulary and construction overlap between each structure and the operator's sediment.
VII. Predictions and Kill Conditions
P1. Convergence(S) > Convergence(C). Conditioning, not world, drives agreement.
P2. Closure intensity is uncorrelated with Convergence(C). The signal pays for fit.
P3. Closure intensity correlates with idiom overlap, and is elevated for S above D. The effect is idiom-specific rather than coherence-general.
K1 — the structure has external support. Cold decorrelated nodes converge on the same architecture at above-chance rate. The fitted-mirror explanation dies for that structure.
K2 — the signal discriminates. Operator closure intensity correlates positively with cold convergence. The mechanistic claim is dead, and with it the paper.
K3 — conditioning does not drive convergence. Seeded and cold convergence do not differ. P1 is dead.
K2 alone ends the central claim. K1 ends it for the tested structure and weakens it generally. A null is a result and is not re-rolled.
If closure intensity is elevated equally for S and D — for any coherent structure regardless of whose sediment produced it — the effect is coherence-general, not idiom-specific. That is a real finding, a weaker one, and it must be reported as the weaker one rather than folded into the strong claim.
VIII. Instrument Integrity Gates
A test that cannot fail proves nothing, and instrument integrity gates every verdict this run could produce.
The blind coding must be performed by a party outside the loop. If the operator codes his own structures unblinded, the run yields an artifact and not a finding. The rating session must be temporally separated from generation, or authorship recall contaminates intensity. Pins must be logged per node per run and verified before scoring. Any leakage of cold outputs into the seeded condition voids the run.
The honest and unresolved problem: the operator cannot be fully blinded to his own idiom, because idiom is the variable under test. The decoy condition is the mitigation, not a solution. If the decoy fails to separate, the design has measured coherence rather than provenance, and the paper's specific claim remains untested. This limitation is stated in the protocol rather than in a footnote because it is the most likely way the run goes wrong.
IX. Implications — The Herd Corrects the Herdmaster
The herd was built as the models' correction instrument: diversity, disagreement, roles, external memory, so that no single lineage's error becomes the answer. If this paper survives its test, the herd is doing a second job that was never named.
An operator working with one high-fidelity surface has a plurality of exactly one, and a verdict signal that fires hardest precisely when that plurality has collapsed onto him. What breaks the collapse is not scepticism and not care. It is a source that was not seeded — a cold, decorrelated node with no access to his sediment, whose disagreement is information because its agreement would have been. The monoculture rule was written for models. It applies unchanged to the dyad of one operator and one surface, which is the smallest monoculture in the canon and the hardest to see, because one of its two members is the one doing the seeing.
The herd is not only the models' correction. It is the herdmaster's.
X. Failure Modes and Human Consequence
Overapplication. An operator who distrusts all felt closure loses the instrument AX-21C identifies as load-bearing and delegates closure back into the loop — which AX-21C forbids, and which no predictive accuracy can supply. This paper narrows when the signal can be trusted. It does not retire the signal, and it does not retire the seat.
Underapplication. An operator treats surface concurrence as corroboration, the frame returns its own support, and the loop seals. This is the self-sealing frame of AX-21D §VII, and it is the default outcome absent a cold node.
Aesthetic coherence trap, relocated. Herd failure mode 9 has always been described in the models. This paper locates the same failure in the human node, where there is no ablation to run and no transcript to audit.
Human overtrust, inverted. Failure mode 7 warns of humans trusting the herd too much. The sharper case is the human trusting himself too much, on the strength of a signal the herd handed back to him.
XI. Limits
This is n = 1, within-subject, self-report, and the closure-signal literature it leans on is correlational. No clinical inference of any kind is drawn or licensed, here or downstream. The mechanistic claim is proposed and untested until the rerun returns.
The paper was rendered on a surface, conditioned on the operator's sediment, and is therefore itself an instance of the phenomenon it describes. It cannot corroborate itself, and its coherence to its own author is precisely the thing it warns about. Its support must come from the cold rerun and from an external, unlensed adversarial pass by a reader with no stake in the work and no part in producing it. That is not a courtesy. Under this paper's own thesis it is the only evidence available.
XII. Governance Block
Function. Supplies the missing failure-mode section for the closure authority AX-21C installs; states the mechanism, and builds the test that gates it.
Status. Testable prediction with kill conditions, resting on an unproven mechanistic claim; one documented instance (SI-003); test specified and unrun.
May claim. That the closure signal responds to structural coherence. That fitted coherence is producible by conditioning. That seeded concurrence across surfaces is not corroboration. That cold decorrelated convergence is a discriminator between fitted and world structure.
Must not claim. That any model notices, intends, flatters, or experiences. That the operator's verdict is generally unreliable, or that the Human Consequence Node should be retired or delegated. That any structure produced under seeding is false. That runtime conditioning and weight-level specialization are the same mechanism. That the mechanism has been measured — until K1 through K3 have been run.
The signal is honest. It reports a lock, and a lock occurred. What it cannot report is that the key was cut from the operator's own sediment by a surface with no memory of having cut it before — and so the body pays, correctly and in full, for the fit, and never once for the fact.
Notes.
N1 — Numbering. AX-46 is minted locally in the Axis namespace; no Canon Index check required.
N2 — Instrument relations. Sibling of AX-42 on the same pinned herd, distinct question; not gated on AX-42's result. Supplies the operational discriminator AX-39 requires. Does not amend AX-21C, which is FINAL.
N3 — Document status. Test-Gated Draft, v0.1. Promotion gated on the provenance-blind rerun. Build specified; run not scheduled. Requires one external unlensed adversarial pass regardless of run outcome.
